Whitstable
Volunteer Centre has been running a Volunteer Car Scheme for many
years and it is one of the largest operating in Kent.
The
service enables elderly or disabled people or anyone who cannot
access public transport to get to essential medical appointments,
as well as other activities if resources permit such as shopping,
social events etc. Without this service many people living in
Whitstable would struggle to maintain their independence and
be far more reliant on family and friends.
There is a yearly £5 membership fee. Each journey costs 45p per mile, plus a £1 administrative fee.
The
scheme is run primarily by volunteers. Volunteer drivers use
their own cars to transport clients and the volunteers who work
in the transport office take calls from clients and allocate
trips to drivers. The transport office is open every weekday
morning between 10.00am and 12.30pm.
A
paid Co-ordinator oversees the smooth running of the scheme.
